Warco GH600 Metal Lathe

[GH600 Lathe]

Overview

The GH600 is a small/medium sized gearhead lathe by Warco (it is actually, somewhat unbelievably classed as a “miniature” lathe!). This lathe is designed for turning metal or machining grade plastics such as acetal. Lathes are incredibly capable machines but require a degree of skill to use, they are also very dangerous if not used correctly. Getting caught in any moving part of the machine will likely result in serious injury or death - induction and careful practice is absolutely required with this machine.

The GH600 has a DRO (digital read out) module which helps with precision turning. The machine can be used to create collets, custom threaded bar, internal threads and can bore to create rings and other useful things.

Safety & Induction

:!: Does this machine need an induction? Yes

Please read all of the information below:

  • You must not wear loose clothing, or clothing that has dangling string or cords when using this machine. Getting entangled in the machine will likely result in death or serious injury before you have time to react.
  • You must wear eye protection when operating this machine. Metal work pieces may chip and small bits of near molten swarf can fire towards you. Eye protection is provided in the makerspace.
  • For the same reason, you should consider wearing work gloves and long sleeved clothing when operating this machine.
  • For the same reason, both guards (chuck and carriage) should be in place when operating the machine. The machine will not power on if the chuck guard is not in place.
  • Operate the machine from a 45 degree angle with the chuck on your left, you can fully operate the machine this way at a safe distance from moving parts.
  • If someone enters the room while you are operating the lathe, turn it off immediately. Distractions can lead to accidents, full concentration is required for safe operation of the lathe.
  • The gears on this lathe can not be changed when it is active.

Date Member ID Notes
01/12/21 Aidan Noticed that the machine is continuing to bleed oil which is dripping from corner of control panel. Contacted Warco and was informed this is 'normal', they recommend keeping an eye on the oil level and topping up if below 50%
01/11/21 Aidan, Russell Tested basic turning operations on the lathe, working as expected. Noted that oil is bleeding from corner of control panel
