Description of activity being assessed
Use of soldering irons, reflow station and hand tools for soldering
Identified hazards
- Burns
- Fumes
- Cuts
- Use of lead based solder
1. Burns
Any burns from a soldering iron or reflow station are likely to be minor, but basic measures should be taken to reduce the risk of burns.
Controls Applied:
- Designated work area for soldering must be kept tidy between use and during use.
- Cables for soldering irons to be unravelled before use.
- Risks in relation to hot air with reflow station must be explained to users - this tool requires demonstration before use.
Recommended Actions:
- Suggest to have some signage to request work area to be kept tidy.
2. Fumes
Controls Applied:
- Fume extractors are provided for use with soldering irons
Recommended Actions:
- None
3. Cuts
There is a potential for minor cuts when working with circuit boards, clipping components and using side cutters and other tools in soldering activity
Controls Applied:
- First aid kits are provided in the room and clearly advertised
Recommended Actions:
- None
4. Use of lead based solder
Lead based solder is permitted in the makerspace
Controls Applied:
- Users must wash hands after use
Recommended Actions:
- Signage should be printed and placed on the wall at soldering station reminding users to wash their hands after use of lead based solder
