Description of activity being assessed
General use of the Paragon Kiln as intended
Identified hazards
- The kiln, its contents and items removed from the kiln might be at very high temperature
- Other items may touch the kiln whilst in use
- Some items may constitute an explosion risk, or release toxic fumes
- Unauthorised or improper use of machine
- Looking into a hot kiln
1. The kiln, its contents and items removed from the kiln might be at very high temperature
Controls Applied:
- No individual other than a makerspace member can use the kiln and a member can only use the machine having completed an induction with an instructor designated by Makerspace directors.
- Makerspace members have clear guidance on what to do in case of injury, including contact with site first aiders and how to contact emergency services.
- Heat resistant gloves must be used when handling hot surfaces or materials
- Induction highlights the heat hazard and the risk that it poses. Inductees must also read the safety and basic operating instructions in the Paragon Ceramic Fibre Jewellery kiln instructions and service manual
- The operator must erect a sign near the kiln/item to indicate that it is hot and caution is required
Recommended Actions:
- Add signage to machine that indicates an induction is strictly required before use
- Add signage to wall with contact number for shop front desk, and list of first aiders in the building (note that first aiders are not available at all times)
2. Other items may touch the kiln whilst in use
Controls Applied:
- As part of machine induction, inductees must read the safety and operating instructions for the kiln which describes control for this hazard

- Makerspace members have clear guidance on what to do in case of injury, including contact with site first aiders and how to contact emergency services.
- As part of machine induction, inductees must read the safety and operating instructions for the kiln which describes control for this hazard
Recommended Actions:
- Add signage to machine that indicates an induction is strictly required before use
- Add signage to wall with contact number for shop front desk, and list of first aiders in the building (note that first aiders are not available at all times)
- The extractor fan should always be on when the kiln is hot
4. Unauthorised or improper use of the machine
Controls Applied:
- No individual other than a makerspace member can use the lathe and a member can only use the machine having completed an induction with an instructor designated by makerspace directors.
- Directors have the power to revoke 'inducted' status if a user is shown to be incompetent or uses the machine inappropriately.
- The machine is locked off when not in use with a padlocked power switch. The padlock has a combination code which is only shared with members once inductions are complete.
Recommended Actions:
- No actions
5. Looking into a hot kiln
Controls Applied:
- No individual other than a makerspace member can use the lathe and a member can only use the machine having completed an induction with an instructor designated by Makerspace directors.
- Makerspace members have clear guidance on what to do in case of injury, including contact with site first aiders and how to contact emergency services.
- Suitable goggles are available and must be used whilst the kiln is hot

- Add signage to wall with contact number for shop front desk, and list of first aiders in the building (note that first aiders are not available at all times)
